About Winchester
Winchester holds a significant place in American history, serving as a strategic prize during the Civil War. The city famously changed hands approximately 70 times during the four-year conflict, more than any other city in the nation. It was also a crucial location for a young George Washington, who began his military and political career here, constructing Fort Loudoun in 1756 and being elected to his first public office, the Virginia House of Burgesses, in 1758.
To get to the airport From Winchester, the primary major airport is Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD). The drive is approximately 45-50 miles east. To get there, take VA-7 E (Berryville Pike) and continue as it becomes the Dulles Greenway (VA-267 E), which leads directly to the airport access road. The drive typically takes about 50 to 60 minutes, depending on traffic.
